Bernardo Santos - Safety & Security

25 June 2025

Congratulations to Bernardo Santos, Ramp Team Leader at Porto Airport (OPO), Portugal whose vigilance earned him our Safety & Security Award and may have saved nearly 200 lives!

Bernardo spotted damage to a Ryanair Boeing 737 aircraft that had gone unnoticed by the Ryanair dispatcher and the pushback tractor operator. Despite the flight being handled by another provider, Bernardo did the right thing by swiftly reporting the problem. The flight did not continue with its journey due to the substantial damage to the aircraft’s stabiliser.

Reflecting his award win, Bernardo shared:

“It is truly an honour to be recognised for living our company values each and every day – especially when there are so many excellent Menzies colleagues out there in the world.”

Bernardo was also keen to highlight his mindset to safety, saying:

When it comes to safety, for me the key is to stay aware of everything around us, follow the rules and procedures that guide our work. Dedication and commitment are fundamental but above all, having passion for what we do – that is what makes all the difference.”

Nilesh Babu Porto and Faro Station Manager added:

“There are moments that remind us of who we are and why we do what we do. Bernardo acted with instinct, courage, and care — not because it was required, but because it was right. His vigilance prevented a serious safety risk, protecting lives and upholding the very heart of our mission. This recognition is a reminder that true excellence is found in the people who care deeply, act bravely, and lead by example.”

Great work, Bernardo!
