Congratulations to the Dallas Fort Worth Cargo team, our global Sustainability winner for working with the airport’s Environmental Affairs Department to keep cardboard waste out of landfill during December.
When the volume of e-commerce cargo handled by the team increased by a staggering 100% in the first two weeks of December 2023, there was a huge spike in the amount of cardboard needing to be recycled. Determined not to send recyclable material to landfill, the team at Dallas Fort Worth reached out to the airport’s Environmental Affairs department, and the two teams worked together to ensure that the cardboard waste was kept out of landfill.
Darryl York joined Menzies in 1998 and is now the general manager for Texas cargo, responsible for three Texas cargo facilities, two at Dallas Fort Worth and one at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston.
Darryl shared more about what the 80+ strong team achieved to win the award, “The team were very focused on making sure none of the cardboard ended up in local landfills. It required a lot of effort which was well worth it to contribute to the Menzies sustainability goals.”
The team have big sustainability plans for 2024 and are working with the airport on a project to recycle more of the used plastics arriving on flights as cargo covers to prevent wet damages.
