Congratulations to Gabriel Burke, our global winner for Safety & Security for spotting and reporting suspicious luggage leading to one of the largest customs seizures at London Luton.
Gabriel noticed the suspicious luggage while offloading a flight and reported it to duty management who in turn reported it to the airport authority. The report led to one of the largest seizures of contraband at Luton by UK Border Force.
His nomination explains the impact his actions had, “Our security policy statement talks about us being responsible by intervening and reporting when something is wrong or doesn't feel right. If you see something, say something – report it.
“Gabriel deserves recognition for reporting his suspicions - no matter how small - as the report disrupted an attempt to smuggle large amounts of illegal material into the UK. This was the best security intervention in 2023 and sets an example to everyone of what a good security culture is.”
Gabriel joined Menzies in April 2022 as a member of our night shift ramp team. Since then, he has enhanced his skills and become an essential part of the group. In recognition of his hard work, dedication, and natural leadership ability, Gabriel was trained as a step-up Team Leader in May 2023.
Gabriel shared his reaction to the award, “I was really surprised to have been given this amazing award from Menzies. It's nice to know that your hard work gets recognised, and that I am a valued member of the Menzies family. Having been here for just over two years, I am always improving my skills and learning from daily events. Winning this award is a result of the fantastic teamwork here at Luton.”
Nathan Wood, Station Manager at Luton added, “I am extremely proud of Gabriel and the recognition he has received throughout Menzies. His actions demonstrate why our ‘see something, say something’ policy is so important and the strong sense of responsibility from both Gabriel and the team.
“Gabriel's exemplary behaviour has inspired his colleagues, resulting in three other agents reporting suspicious activities in the past month. Their vigilance has led to further customs seizures. Gabriel is a role model for both the team and the wider community.”
