Building relationships with those around us makes us all stronger and more successful.

Gabriel Sofronea and Will Bennett, based in London Heathrow (LHR-JV) were chosen as the winner of the global Teamwork award and also the Employee of the Year for their commitment to teamwork.

When their colleague Michael Dixon suffered a cardiac arrest, Gabriel, who was recently promoted to online trainer, and Will, Operations Supervisor, took turns performing CPR while the rest of the team coordinated with emergency services. Their well-coordinated response not only saved the life of their colleague but showcased their ability to respond to a crisis as a team.

Tony Margerison, Fuels LHR JV and Support Service Manager said, “Both Will and Gabe paid tribute to the entire LHR JV team on duty the day they saved Michael Dixon’s life. I agree that while it was a whole team effort, they led the team on the day and took control of the CPR and defibrillator use. They are worthy winners and we are very proud of them both!”

Gabriel shared his thoughts, “Winning the award was very unexpected. Thank you to Tony, Jenny & Marco for organising the presentation celebration, it feels good to be recognised.”

Will paid tribute to the training and equipment that enabled their response, “We’re very fortunate to have the training to respond as we did. Having a working defibrillator available played a huge part and highlighted the importance of this equipment in the workplace.

“No one knows how a scenario like this will affect them, even months later, which why awareness of mental health is so important, especially in a male-dominated workplace. We’re lucky that our manager Tony Margerison has shown great compassion and has had an open door.

“I’m surprised to be considered for any award, and it’s even more humbling to receive a global award! I’m very proud to accept the award and grateful for those who thought it was worth a vote. The greatest reward is seeing our colleague and mate on shift.”
