Selmy Celis, a traffic supervisor in Cozumel, has been with Menzies for 12 years and is our 2023 global winner for Agility for making quick decisions to avoid cancelled flights.

Selmy received a call informing her that a flight from Cozumel to Dallas Fort Worth was going to be cancelled since the first officer’s time allowance would expire while the flight was in the air. Demonstrating quick thinking, Selmy asked dispatch if the first officer’s time would allow him to complete a flight going to Miami which was preparing to depart. After confirming it was an option, Selmy spoke to the captain, got authorisation for the swap and the first officers switched aircraft.

As explained in her nomination, Selmy’s quick thinking had a great result, “The flight left on time, the passengers did not miss their flight or connections and the company had no losses - all due to the speed of an intelligent solution saving the day for many.”

Laura Rodriguez, Cozumel Station Manager, presented Selmy with her award, “It is very gratifying to have people who contribute and give everything for their work. Colleagues like Selmy are valuable for putting the skills and knowledge that led them to success into practice. Observing that no matter what department, what station, or what country of the world we are in, good deeds will always be seen and recognised. Your commitment to our company is something we value and hope to continue to do so.”

Selmy reflected on what the award means to her, “I am very happy to be recognised with this award. I am very proud to belong to the Menzies family who have always supported me in my 12 years of service. There are no words to describe what I feel, but I do want to express my deep gratitude to my team for trusting me and above all for their great support, since this would not be possible if it were not for them.
