Reducing printing by 15%+ in 2023
31 August 2023
In 2023 we are setting new net zero targets and are committed to reducing our environmental impacts and supporting UN Sustainable Development Goal 13, Climate Action.
One of our targets in 2023 is to reduce the amount we print by 15%.
In 2022, we printed a colossal 28m+ pages:
= 11m+ print jobs
= 2,990 trees consumed
= 318 tonnes CO2
Every time we print, there is an environmental cost, as well as financial one:
- Energy used to power the printer = CO2e emissions
- Chemicals, metals and plastics used in toner cartridges
- Trees cut down to make the paper
- Paper and toner waste
Think before you print
We monitor printing every week across the business, tracking how much we are printing and why we are printing. We’ll be sharing a monthly update with our senior leaders and station managers on how we are tracking at each location against our 15% target and identifying where we can aim to make the biggest savings.
How can you help?
Before you click 'Print' next time, ask yourself:
- Do you REALLY need to print?
- If your content is available online, do you need to print it as well?
- If you have to print, can you print double sided and/or in black and white?
We already have lots of ways we can reduce the amount we print and more planned for the future:
- RSMS Mobile
- Kronos App, for employees to access rosters, request leave and add missed punches electronically instead of using paper forms
- In Cargo, we are digitising document packs in a pilot running at some stations
- We’ll be digitising much more of our processes and comms e.g. digital manifest archives, instead of paper, and working with airlines on more shared paper processes
- Online learning and employee onboarding processes
- MS Teams
- Kronos App, for employees to access rosters, request leave and add missed punches electronically instead of using paper forms
- The MARS employee portal for read & sign, shift bids and shift swaps is moving to digital
- In Cargo, we are digitising document packs, already live at some stations
- We’ll be digitising much more of our processes and comms e.g. digital manifest archives, instead of paper, and working with airlines on more shared paper processes
And we’re working on more. If you have any ideas to help reduce printing, please send them to the Sustainability mailbox.
Together, we can all help reduce our environmental impacts and reach our goals.
