How to recognise phishing emails
8 October 2024
Recognising and reporting phishing attempts is crucial for protecting your personal information and preventing cyber-attacks. Phishing is a form of cybercrime where attackers impersonate legitimate entities to trick individuals into revealing sensitive information, such as passwords or financial details.
Suspicious senders: check the sender’s email address or phone number. Phishing messages often come from addresses that look similar to legitimate ones but have slight variations.
Urgent or threatening language: be wary of messages that create a sense of urgency or fear, such as threats of account suspension or legal action.
Unusual requests: legitimate organisations will not ask for sensitive information like passwords or bank details via email or text.
Poor grammar and spelling: many phishing messages contain noticeable spelling and grammatical errors.
Unexpected attachments or links: Avoid clicking on links or downloading attachments from unknown or unexpected sources.
