We received a large number of suggestions for the Unsung Hero award and one really stood out! Our official nomination for the GHI Pride of Ground Handling Awards’ Unsung Hero was GSE Manager Victor Diaz.

Victor is a veteran of the United States army and leads by example. He is responsible for all internal and third party GSE mechanics and maintenance at two stations in the USA: Orlando Sanford International (SFB) and Orlando International (MCO) where he is known for supporting his colleagues and responding to emergencies.

Victor joined Menzies in 2016. A skilled mechanic and team-player, Victor was promoted to GSE Manager in 2018 and his approach to maintenance management, his ability to motivate his team and his commitment to supporting Menzies’ customers has resulted in some remarkable improvements.

He spends as much time as possible in the workshop and has reduced the overall cost of repair and maintenance of GSE through careful supplier selection, inventory management and preventative maintenance - extending the useful life of GSE equipment owned by Menzies.

Victor and his team’s approach to maintenance management has reduced the number of delays due to breakdown by 80% year on year (2019 vs 2018). In fact, Frontier Airlines names MCO their ‘Station of the Year’ in 2018 and Menzies’ GSE team’s rigorous maintenance was a factor in that decision.
