Front of House uniform launch Q&A with Juliet Thomson, Chief People Officer

7 October 2024

Following the launch our new Front of House uniform, we spoke to Juliet Thomson, Chief People Officer, to hear about the design process and how it was shaped by colleague feedback.

Why has Menzies launched a new uniform?

It has been over a decade since the last Front of House uniform was updated. In that time, our business has undergone a significant transformation – we’ve grown to become the world’s largest aviation services Juliet Thomson attends the launch event alongside Philipp Joeinig, Group CEO, and Miguel Gomez, EVP Europe.company, and number one by countries, airports, and aircraft turns.

As we continue to grow and evolve, we need a uniform that represents our brand today and a design that reflects our values and standards. As a result, the decision was made to launch our new uniform, starting with our passenger-facing colleagues, marking the next chapter in our journey.

The new uniforms will be introduced in a phased manner over the next 12 months, beginning in October and running until December 2025. Our stations in the UK, Spain and Portugal will be among the first to transition to the new uniform. Further information on the full roll-out will be shared soon. We’re also working on a new back of house uniform design, which our colleagues can expect further updates on in the coming months.

What feedback, if any, have employees provided during the uniform design process?

The design process was shaped by direct feedback from our people, with comfort, functionality and sustainability at the forefront of the new design. We not only wanted to provide our employees with a uniform that they are proud to wear, but also one that is designed to meet their needs.

Collaborating with a diverse cross-section of employees was a vital part of the design process. Our employees represent a diverse range of cultures, in more than 65 countries on six continents. Selecting a cross-section of employees globally ensured representation for all ethnicities, ages, religious beliefs and gender identities.

We’re proud to roll-out a design, where the input from colleagues can be seen and felt. From the positioning of pockets to improve accessibility to the expandable waistbands that will provide a more customisable and comfortable fit, this uniform range has been designed by our people, for our people.A group photo at the launch of the new uniform

What distinguishes the new uniform from the previous one in terms of style, functionality and materials?

The materials used within the new uniform are as crucial as the design itself. Based upon colleague feedback, enhancements were made to provide a more comfortable fit. For example, within the design process many colleagues noted that the fabric used in shirts had no stretch and was very heavy, making it challenging to wear in the fast-paced and dynamic airport environment. Based on this feedback, we worked closely with our design teams to introduce materials to make the uniform lighter, more breathable and with greater stretch. For our colleagues operating in colder environments, we have also included warmer options in the range.Models show off the new look on the Menzies catwalk

In a first for the aviation services industry, we are also introducing a new footwear policy, allowing Front of House employees to wear trainers with their uniforms. This significant change reflects our commitment to employee wellbeing and acknowledging the importance of comfort in delivering a first-class service.

Sustainable and recycled materials have been incorporated into the design and distribution process. We wanted a uniform that reflects our commitment to sustainability, ethical practices and social responsibility. Something that is both fit for the future and one that plays a part in helping to protect our planet’s future.

As a result, we’re proud to work with suppliers which are dedicated and focused on environmental, social, and ethical policies, that uphold positive working conditions, fair labour practices, and ensure the protection of workers’ rights throughout their operations.

We are not reliant on any single territory and can encourage local production, and in addition to recycled fabrics, we’re removing plastic bags from all our packaging, replacing them with biodegradable alternatives or tissue paper to protect all items during transportation.

What can employees expect from their new uniform?

Expect a uniform that has been designed with optimal comfort and performance in mind and that can adapt to varying climates while offering durability, comfort and protection. It is a visible representation of our investment in our most valuable resource – our people. Our people are at the heart of our business, and we hope they wear this new uniform with pride.
