International Women's Day 2024

In the third instalment of our International Women’s Day series, we spoke with Susan Whelan, General Manager at Baltimore/Washington International Airport (BWI) (pictured above left) and Romana Sajjad, a Regional Human Resources Manager in Canada (pictured above right).
Susan Whelan, General Manager Baltimore/Washington International Airport
"All I have ever really done, in my 35-plus years’ working career, is aviation. I started from the ground up and have worked in nearly every position. What I love most are the relationships - I have worked in multiple airports and have attended many conferences, and the relationships I have built are imperative for a well-rounded career.
It is not always easy for women to believe they have what it takes to be a leader. This belief has nothing to do with their abilities, and everything to do with how society has unintentionally taught women to doubt themselves. Unintentional male bias can also put many women off exploring an aviation career.
Whether it’s recognising women in leadership roles or offering the Women in Leadership programme, Menzies values women in aviation and acknowledges the contributions women make. Seeing more women in the executive levels of leadership would be inspiring to those looking to reach the highest levels in aviation.
I have always felt like my contributions, voice, experience, and knowledge have been appreciated and valued by the company. I never feel like I am walking on eggshells, or my voice is not being heard. I feel equal and respected.
My advice to anyone looking for an aviation career is to believe you belong and that your voice counts. Believe in yourself and your ability to be a positive influence on your coworkers, our customers, and the company. Come with an open mind and see how amazing it is to be a part of this dynamic industry."
Romana Sajjad, Regional Human Resources Manager Canada
"I have been with Menzies for almost three years and there is always something new and unexpected which is what I enjoy the most. I’ve met some of the most passionate and dedicated people in the aviation industry.
There is a lack of females in aviation especially in leadership roles, so programmes like Women in Leadership are great opportunities to meet other female leaders so we can learn from each other’s experiences and pave the way for each other where possible and build resourceful working relationships. To attract more women into aviation, I’d like to see programmes directed toward male counterparts educating them on creating space for women in the workforce.
My line manager, Talin Bazerkanian, has been a great mentor and instrumental in paving the path for my growth at Menzies. Talin is passionate about what she does and engages her team really well.
If you are looking to learn and grow your career and thrive in challenging environments, aviation is the perfect fit!"
