International Women's Day 2024

4 March 2024

This Friday is International Women’s Day, which highlights the importance of achieving gender equality, and a world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination. To mark this important day, we’ve asked inspirational women in a variety of roles across our business to share their experiences of working in the aviation industry.

Today, we’re featuring two women who work in our MEAA region. Lie Olive, HR Manager (pictured above right) and Lina Mallah, SVP Organisation Change and Systems (pictured above left) share their experiences of working at Menzies and how the company has supported their career ambitions.

Lie Olive, HR Manager
“I’ve worked at Menzies since 2015 and have been pleased to see professional training and personal development being used to enable women to develop and move into higher managerial positions. I was invited to take part in the Women in Leadership programme, and what the programme did was give me the tools and self-assurance to advocate new ideas. For example, I now feel far more comfortable making proposals to top management.”

As well as professional training and personal development, role models and mentors play an important role in developing female leaders. In particular, Rabah Bu Hamdan and Cherif Fall have always pushed me to go beyond my limitations and regularly challenge me to consider new, innovative ways of achieving or exceeding the objectives assigned to me.

To attract more women to aviation, we should promote the whole range of aviation careers as early as possible at high school. My advice to women considering a career in aviation is to take an interest in it early, learn as much as you can and be a leader in your business.”

Lina Mallah, SVP Organisational Change & Systems
“Before I joined the aviation industry, I was hesitant and never thought that I would enjoy it. To the contrary, I love the dynamic and fast-paced environment that I work in. Aviation is an industry that is constantly evolving, with new technologies, challenges, and opportunities arising regularly. I enjoy the sense of accomplishment that comes from being part of an industry that plays a crucial role in connecting people around the globe.

Aviation has historically been male-dominated and it’s rare to see high-profile female role models in the industry, which can create an unwelcoming environment for women. Menzies sees all employees as equal and provides support to push yourself to excel.

Taking part in the Women in Leadership Programme was empowering - supporting women in their career development, sharing common concerns and strengthening confidence together.

Many people’s perception of aviation is limited to aircraft or airports, and they may not realise how they work together. Often people associate women in aviation solely with passenger services or flight attendants. Showcasing the wide range of roles available, including women in senior aviation roles would be a great way to attract more women to the industry.

My advice to women considering a career in aviation is to pursue their passion with determination and confidence. It’s crucial to seek mentorship and networking opportunities within the industry to gain valuable insights and support. I also want them to remember that gender should never limit your aspirations, and your skills and dedication can lead to successful careers in aviation.”
