Hockey for Hope
21 September 2023
As part of our John Maxwell Menzies (JMM) Community Fund, we’re honoured to support incredible causes around the world, like the QEII Foundation, championed by Sharon Needham, our Regional Manager for Fuel Operations, based at Halifax Stanfield International Airport (YHZ) in Canada.
Heading up a three-day hockey tournament, aptly named Hockey for Hope, Sharon was raising money to improve care for future cancer patients and survivors. The three-day tournament was held earlier in September with proceeds going to a newly-created fund, through the QEII Foundation, that will provide financial assistance to QEII cancer patients who need mental health support – whether it’s helping to cover the costs of private counselling, therapy or the treatments they require.
The tournament raised $32,000 for local cancer patients, well exceeding their original target of $10,000.
Sharon said, “We hear a lot about the physical effects of cancer treatments, but the social and emotional impacts can be just as daunting. When your sole focus is fighting this disease and getting better, you’re often ignoring the mental trauma of your cancer experience – which is why prioritizing your mental health is so important.”
“We will be meeting with the cancer care team & the QEII Foundation to present our cheque in the coming weeks and I am so excited about how this impacts lives of cancer patients and survivors!”
