UK National Apprenticeships Week: Derrick Rabey

10 February 2021

In the UK it is National Apprenticeships Week, and we’re celebrating the hard work and achievements of three Menzies apprentices: <<Mariusz Meca>>, <<Caroline English>> and Derrick Rabey. We asked Derrick, a fuels allocator at London Stansted, about the Team Leading apprenticeship he’s been working on, with the help of tutors at Uxbridge College in London.

“My line manager suggested the apprenticeship might be a good way to develop myself and expand my knowledge,” says Derrick. “The apprenticeship has confirmed that the work, ideas and management skills that I have been using are correct.  I found the input from the apprenticeship delivery team great as they you guide you to develop your thinking.”

Like the other apprentices, Derrick has learned a lot about himself; “I’ve learned better time management and to carry on with the way I interact with colleagues. I’ve learned to find the balance between implementing best practise and supporting the operations’ needs.”

Derrick’s apprenticeship experience has given him the management tools and techniques to create a really positive working environment. He continues; “It has made my job easier, knowing how people are thinking and using my emotional intelligence. Self-awareness has been a massively rewarding part of the apprenticeship, as well as coaching and mentoring, project work and learning to understand peoples’ thinking and learning styles.”
