Peter plays his part in Qatar start-up

Following the news that Menzies would be providing handling services to Qatar Airways Cargo at London Heathrow, there were only a couple of months to get ready for today’s start-up.

Peter Gardner, Apprenticeship and Talent Development Manager, UK&I, played a central role in preparing and welcoming the new team, which includes eight existing Menzies employees and more than 60 new joiners who’ve transferred to Menzies from Dnata, Qatar’s previous handling company.

Peter explains: “Initially, the new joiners will be supported by eight Menzies ambassadors, who’ll help them to get their bearings in our warehouse and learn about the equipment and systems. The warehouse and reception area have just been refurbished so there’s a lot that’s new for everyone.”

It’s not just the facilities that are different though. Peter and the Heathrow-based HR and leadership teams have run a full induction programme designed to welcome the new joiners to Menzies. “I’ve met all of the new colleagues in person and taken them through our welcome presentation. It’s important that they know about our business and about the benefits and development opportunities Menzies can offer. It also gave them a chance to ask questions and meet some of the people they’ll be working with,” says Peter.

Peter, who usually works on our apprenticeship programmes, found running the engagement programme to be extremely positive: “It’s really helped to get everyone excited about the future and to feel included in the plans. With the coronavirus pandemic still affecting some parts of our operation, it has been really rewarding to be involved in a new customer start-up. The feedback from the team has been great and I’m sure we’ll keep the momentum going across the whole of Cargo. It’s been hard work but good fun being part of such a positive project.”
