Supporting aid efforts amid conflict

23 October 2024

In the face of geopolitical instability, the aviation industry continues to overcome the challenges of airspace closures whilst working together to uphold safety and security.

We've seen some fantastic examples of this from across our network, with cargo teams at Copenhagen Airport in Denmark (CPH), supporting a crucial operation to transport medical aid supplies to the Middle East, while our teams at Sydney Airport (SYD) in Australia have been overseeing repatriation flights from Lebanon.

For our colleagues in Copenhagen, critical medical aid supplies arrived at the airport from UNICEF’s Global Supply and Logistics Hub, the world’s largest humanitarian warehouse facility.

At very short notice, the team worked efficiently to safely load the A321 charter flight bound for Beirut, which arrived safely in the capital and largest city of Lebanon shortly, met by UNICEF officials. Thanks to everyone involved, including our CPH cargo team, vital supplies will reach those impacted by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Qatar repatriation flight arrives at SYD

Due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, many foreign nationals have been advised to leave the region. Our colleagues at Sydney Airport played an important role by handling eight repatriation flights organised by Qatar Airways, which saw more than 2,000 Australian citizens return from Lebanon.

Additionally, the Passenger with Reduced Mobility Agent team did a fantastic job in handling over 150 requests for wheelchair assistance for elderly or vulnerable passengers.

Thank you to our colleagues in Copenhagen and Sydney for their contribution to ensuring these operations are delivered successfully and safely. We are committed to continuing to play our part in supporting the global aviation ecosystem.
