World Refugee Day

20 June 2024

📅 20 June is UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency’s World Refugee Day, when we pay tribute to those who have been forced to flee.

UNHCR is a global organization dedicated to saving lives, protecting rights and building a better future for refugees. It leads on international action to protect refugees, forcibly displaced communities and stateless people.

Our Chief People Officer, Juliet Thomson recently traveled to UNHCR’s headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, to discuss how Menzies can build on its existing commitments to refugees around the world. This comes against the backdrop of an unprecedented global refugee crisis, where 1 in 69 individuals worldwide remain forcibly displayed, rising to 117.3 million people, as a result of persecution, conflict, violence and human rights violations.

🤝 At the meeting, Juliet and the UNHCR’s Sandrine Flavier and Line Astrom (pictured above) established the basis for a collaborative relationship between Menzies and UNHCR. The discussion touched on how the UNHCR and Menzies can work together to reach refugees, enhance workforce integration and improve labour mobility.

We join the UNHCR in recognising the strength and courage of people who have been forced to flee, and remain committed to exploring opportunities to help refugees, through employment, training and support.
