Reducing plastic use

22 December 2023

🌍 We know that reducing the volume of plastic use and waste is crucial to our journey to net-zero by 2045.

That’s why we’re transitioning toβ€―BioNatur Plastics for use in our cargo operations. The growing line of BioNatur Plastics offer a more sustainable alternative to regular plastics, with all products being recyclable and truly biodegradable. While traditional plastics typically take 1,000 years to degrade in a landfill environment, BioNatur Plastics products will do so in just 8 – 12 years, leaving no trace of microplastics in the process.

BioNatur Plastics will first be used in our cargo operations at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and Miami International Airport (MIA), where the switch will reduce long-term plastic waste by more than five million water bottles each year. Plans to continue rolling out the sustainable material will follow across all US cargo operations, and into Europe and the UK.

As well as being fully recyclable and biodegradable, the benefits of BioNatur Plastics include:

β™» Indefinite shelf life, helping to reduce unnecessary waste
πŸ₯‘ Suitable for the transportation of food and temperature-controlled items
πŸ’ͺ Stronger and more resilient than plastics with the same thickness, reducing waste

Katy Reid, Head of Sustainability & Corporate Responsibility, Menzies Aviation, said: “Waste is a top priority for many of our stakeholders, and the introduction of BioNatur will not only help make our cargo operations more sustainable, but also ensure we’re working in partnership with our customers to meet their own ESG goals.”
