Allyship in the Americas

20 April 2023

As part of the United Nation’s International Women’s Day in March, we shared that we would be focusing on allyship in 2023 to help make Menzies a more inclusive, diverse and equitable organisation which will benefit everyone.

We’re pleased to share more stories of allyship in action from  colleagues in the Americas.

Mary Briggs, Director of Employee Engagement and Development
What drew me to Menzies was the opportunity to try new things and serve people in new ways. My leaders always presented obstacles as an opportunity to think critically and work towards new solutions. I’ve never had a leader say, “do it the way it’s always been done” when faced with a challenge.

I try to be an ally for all team members and help create opportunities for more leaders to be allies to their team. I think the root of allyship is helping others. This is at the root of every initiative, holiday, or form of recognition.

Wanda Estrada, Regional Risk Manager - West
When I was a young girl, I wanted to be a firefighter like my father however back then girls could not. Years later, my father retired and became a safety instructor, and I began my career in safety and workers compensation.

This is where I found my passion and followed in my father’s career path. Today my father and I will have long conversations about work and one time he said, “Mija I am so proud of you and I realize you can achieve anything you put your mind to”.  I strongly believe the heart of any company are the employees, and every employee should be treated with dignity and respect.

I have had great mentors and allies at Menzies who have helped me grow professionally and personally. Menzies has a culture where employees can achieve their goals through hard work and dedication. I am so proud to be part of Menzies and especially the risk team.

Linze Green, Talent Acquisition Specialist
I have been with the company for two years, and what I appreciate most about Menzies is our ability to embrace innovative ideas, diversity, and the opportunity to travel and represent the brand.

In my department being an ally is expected. My motto is, “teamwork, makes the dream work.”

Supporting each other is key to developing a trusting relationship with your peers.

The advice I would give upcoming leaders in the business is to be humble, share your successes with your team members, set an example, learn more about your team, offer transparency, provide constructive feedback, be goal oriented and build trust.

Misty Morey, Corporate Training & Compliance Manager
I have benefitted from allyship on many occasions from both males and females. A lot of times in businesses people think that the men are for the men and unfortunately the women are against each other. I have never found that here.

Peter Weir and Jason Adair encouraged me and gave me really good advice when I moved into my current role. When I was moving up the ranks I tried three different times to be a lead and kept getting rejected. My previous supervisor and GM Kim Rohleder encouraged me to keep trying and I did. When I was trying to move up to a supervisor role, Kim continued to encourage me and continues to be an ally now.

Since day one, Kim has been my go-to and now with Peter, Jason along with others, I feel like I have a group of people I can go to for support.

I have never had a job that I loved so much and it’s because of the people I work with and the people who have helped me get where I am.

Kim O’Dell, HR Director West
During my 25 years with Menzies, I have been very fortunate to work with managers, both past and present, who have made me feel valued, appreciated and an important part of their team. Menzies has offered many opportunities for me to grow and advance my career over the years.

I am so grateful to have an incredible mentor who saw potential in me and took the time to share her vast knowledge and experience, which allowed me to take on this new role with confidence, knowing she believes in me and will always be there to support me.

Kimberly Rohleder, General Manager Wichita (ICT)
I have had a great experience working for Menzies.  I started as a supervisor in 2015 and within a few years I was promoted to Station Manager. Menzies likes to promote from within and with hard work anything is possible.

I have had great leaders and coworkers that have always been a great support system along the way. Working together is the key to success.

Nicole Stewart, General Manager San Francisco (SFO)
Since I started with Menzies two years ago, my team has supported me, provided guidance, answered my questions and is open to my suggestions as we strengthen our operations. We’ve welcomed new teammates and other Menzies groups and our goal is to have a safe, effective and strong operation. We’ve formed relationships with the other Menzies businesses at the site, the airport, our suppliers and airline members, improving communication across the board.

My SFO Maintenance &Operations (M&O) management and supervisory team is made up of three amazing women and three pretty great men as well!  I’m proud to lead my team and would encourage anyone looking to advance their careers within Menzies to ask lots of questions, be curious, and don’t be afraid to ask for help, but beyond all of that: go for it. You have a whole lot of people cheering you on and ready to support.

Susan Whelan, General Manager Baltimore-Washington (BWI)
My advice for upcoming leaders in the business is to strive to be more open-minded. Self-reflect on what is truly important and go after it. There is nothing holding you back, but you! I would ask that men make a concerted effort to fully welcome more women into leadership, and for women to believe that they actually belong there. Not only do women belong, but they bring a wealth of perspective and knowledge that will assist in assuring a successful operation
