World No Tobacco Day 2022
31 May 2022
Today is World No Tobacco Day and this year’s theme aims to raise awareness of the negative impact tobacco has on the environment.
Did you know that:
- 200 000 hectares of land are cleared every year to grow tobacco
- It takes 3.7 litres of water to make a single cigarette
- 4.5 trillion cigarette butts pollute the environment every year
- The tobacco industry has an annual greenhouse gas contribution of 84 megatons carbon dioxide equivalent
Tobacco production and use contributes to climate change, reduces climate resistance, deforestation, wastes valuable resources and is damaging to ecosystems. We are therefore encouraging our people to quit tobacco, for their health and the health of our planet.
At Menzies we recognise the impact that our own industry has on the planet. In 2021, we demonstrated our commitment to addressing this impact, launching our All In sustainability strategy. All In is our plan to make a positive difference in a changing world for our people, communities and the planet, and you can read more about it on our website.
The World Health Organization website has more information about the impact of tobacco on the environment and advice on quitting tobacco.
