Get moving...with David Marriner

How did you get into going to the gym?
With regards the gym it’s my “have to” go to place, my addiction if you like. I dabbled with gyms over the years depending where working in the UK for Menzies but only took it serious once I decided to get married.(In secret in Las Vegas) I realised then I was a little bit chubby and needed to do something about it so started swimming again and a gym routine. It took some time and effort but the weight started to come off, as with a lot of people you plateau and can’t move beyond a certain point, this was when I found the benefits of a personal trainer and have had one ever since. Ziggy and I have trained together ever since but it wasn’t until lockdown that I learned about withdrawal symptoms, mentally and physically I was cut off from both the gym and the mental support that comes with training together. Feeling like a caged animal needing to escape the only way out was exercise, my routine was gone and my work life balance out the window. Throughout lockdown I ran, skipped, boxed, biked and eventually got back to training together outside.
What do you enjoy most about it?
Amazing what you can do with just your own body weight, even managed to get a couple of IT staff out for a session. I like to set goals so 2021 is a 6-pack for the first time in my life. Routine is great for your mental health also, so up at 5am every day, train 6 days a week, If I don’t get my fix each morning it offsets my day completely. Each day is a different body part and I change my program regularly to shock the body and my mind
How does going to the gym benefit your wellbeing?
At my age (55) physical well being is very important, I crave the gym every day and my priority is to keep fit a long as I can.
