Round the clock support for repatriation at Tambo

6 May 2020

The Menzies VIP Team at Tambo Airport in South Africa has taken a lead role in supporting the country’s repatriation and medical supply flights.

Smaller airports in the Johannesburg area are closed during the coronavirus lockdown, so all in-bound medical supply flights for the region are landing at Tambo and being handled by Menzies. This includes a weekly Safe Air flight using a 727-200 to bring in medical equipment and regular Guardian Air evacuation flights.

Charmaine Richards, General Manager Passenger and Executive services, said: “I’m proud to be part of this team, we’ve been on duty round-the-clock since the lockdown began and despite the challenges, we’ve received numerous compliments from customers who’re delighted with the support and service we’re giving them.”

In a single week, and working alongside the Ramp and Passenger Teams, they handled two Saudi Airline repatriation flights and another for Global Aviation, bringing passengers home from Mogadishu in Somalia. In addition, they worked on a number of chartered repatriation and cargo flights operated on PC12, GLEX, Lear Jet and Beechcraft planes.
