Officials in attendance at Baltimore as critical flights continue
14 May 2020
The hard work at BWI continued throughout April - attracting the attention of state politicians and federal officials as Menzies employees handled cargos of personal protective equipment (PPE) and testing kits.
The mercy flights, which follow on from recent operations to support island communities, included an Antonov aircraft chartered the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to bring 379 pallets of medical PPE to Baltimore. Menzies crews used 15 tractor trailers to offload the supplies and the landing and initial offload were filmed by FEMA.
Susan Whelan, General Manager, said; “It takes real teamwork to unload almost 400 pallets onto 15 tractor trailers, especially in the rain. May is looking to be just as busy as April with more mercy flights scheduled on multiple carriers. With the suspension of scheduled flights, my ground handling team has really stepped and worked different hours to ensure these flights are handled with care.”
Additionally, 500,000 coronavirus testing kits were delivered via Korean Air Boeing 777 from South Korea. Maryland Governor and First Lady, Larry and Yumi Hogan, welcomed the flight onto the tarmac. The flight is the first ever Korean Air flight direct from Incheon International Airport to BWI and its critical load was transferred by Menzies to the National Guard.
