Your role in protecting Menzies - data protection best practice
10 December 2020
Data, or information, is everywhere and the way that we handle that data is guided by law. If we break those data protection laws we can be fined large sums of money so it is important that you know:
- what personal data is,
- how to protect personal data and
- what to do if data is lost or shared incorrectly.
What is personal data
Personal data is any information that relates to or identifies an individual. For example their name, email address, or even a picture of their home or family. All of these can be considered as personal data.
How to protect personal data – manage access to data
- change your log in password regularly and use a mix of letters, numbers and special characters
- lock your computer screen when you’re not at your desk
- if you’re viewing personal data make sure others can’t see it, either in the office or if you’re screensharing in Microsoft Teams
- store personal data securely on company devices and keep a clear desk
What to do in the event of a data breach
If you think that personal data has been lost or shared incorrectly, you must contact your local IT Service Desk immediately.
